New Patients
Your first visit, step by step
Welcome to Pacific Bone & Joint. A little preparation — forms in the portal, imaging uploaded, and an early arrival — means your first visit is spent on your hip, knee, or injury rather than on paperwork.
Not scheduled yet? Request an appointment on Klara or give us a call. One phone number reaches all four clinics.
Quick checklist
- Forms completed in the patient portal
- Imaging uploaded or on a disc
- Referral in place, if your plan needs one
- Photo ID, insurance card, and medication list in hand
- Arrive 30 minutes before your appointment time
Before You Come
Three things to do ahead of your visit
Each one saves time on the day and lets your care team prepare for you.
- 1
Complete your forms in the patient portal
We prefer that new-patient forms be completed in the portal before your visit, so your time with us goes to your care rather than paperwork. If you do not have portal access yet, call us and we will set it up.
Log in to the patient portal → - 2
Upload your imaging
If you have X-rays, an MRI, or a CT from another office, upload them ahead of time so your surgeon and care team can review them before you arrive.
Upload X-ray, MRI, or CT → - 3
Check whether your plan needs a referral
Some plans — Ohana Medicare, AlohaCare, QUEST, VA, and Tricare Prime — require a referral or prior authorization before your visit. Confirm the requirement with your health plan or referring provider.
See insurance plans →
Don't have portal access? Call (808) 439-6201 and our front office will get you set up. If you cannot finish your forms ahead of time, that's okay — just plan on a little extra time at check-in.
What to Bring
Bring these with you
- Photo ID
- Insurance card
- Imaging on disc or already uploaded (X-ray, MRI, CT)
- Previous notes, operative reports, or records from other providers
- A list of your current medications
- Your referral or authorization, if your plan requires one
Imaging you have already uploaded does not need to come on a disc, but the written radiology report is still helpful if you have it.
Arrival
Please arrive 30 minutes early
Check-in, insurance verification, and any remaining forms take time. Arriving 30 minutes before your appointment keeps your visit — and the visits after yours — on schedule.

At Your Visit
What happens at the first visit
You will meet Dr. Paul Norio Morton, MD, or Justin Kapono Grandalen, PA, along with the clinic team.
Check in
Arrive 30 minutes before your appointment time so we can confirm your information and finish anything left on your forms.
Exam
Your surgeon or physician assistant listens to what has been going on, examines the area, and reviews any imaging and records you brought or uploaded.
On-site imaging if needed
When new X-rays or an ultrasound would help, they are done in the clinic during the same visit whenever possible.
Your plan
You leave with a clear explanation of what we found and the next step — whether that is physical therapy, an injection, more imaging, a follow-up, or a surgical conversation.
Prefer to meet by video first? Everyone is offered video visits — a good option for imaging review and neighbor-island consultations.
After Hours
Need us after hours or after surgery?
Call our main number, (808) 439-6201, any time. After clinic hours, calls are answered by Physicians Exchange, our after-hours answering service, which reaches the on-call provider for urgent concerns and post-operative emergencies.
For chest pain, trouble breathing, or any life-threatening emergency, call 911.
Common Questions
New-patient questions, answered
Can I do my paperwork ahead of time?+
Yes, and we prefer it. New-patient forms are completed in our patient portal before your visit. Finishing them ahead means your appointment time goes to your exam and your questions instead of forms.
What if I don’t have portal access?+
Call (808) 439-6201 and our front office will set up your portal access. If you are not able to complete the forms before your visit, plan on a little extra time at check-in and we will help you there.
How early should I arrive?+
Please arrive 30 minutes before your appointment time. That covers check-in, insurance verification, and any forms that still need to be completed.
I’m coming from another island. How does that work?+
We see neighbor-island patients at all four clinics — Honolulu and Waipahu on Oahu, and Hilo and Kona on the Big Island (Kona is by appointment only). Upload your imaging ahead of time so we can review it before you travel, and ask our team about a video visit for follow-ups so you do not have to fly for every appointment. If surgery is planned, we prefer that you stay near the facility the night before and the night after, and someone must drive you home.
Do you offer video visits?+
Yes. Everyone is offered video visits. Hawai‘i patients meet us on Doximity — we call and text you at your appointment time, with nothing to install. International patients use our doxy.me room. A video visit does not replace an in-person exam, so upload your imaging beforehand. See our Video Visits page for details.
Do I need a referral?+
Most plans do not require one, but Ohana Medicare, AlohaCare, QUEST (Medicaid), VA, and Tricare Prime do require a referral or prior authorization before your visit. Check with your health plan or referring provider, and see our Insurance page for the full list of plans we accept.
