Orthopedic Care for Waikīkī

Orthopedic Care for Patients in Waikīkī, Hawai‘i

Waikīkī is one of the busiest few square miles in Hawai‘i. It is home to thousands of residents, many of them in high-rise condos, and it hosts visitors who spend their days surfing, hiking Diamond Head, and walking miles of sidewalk. Orthopedic problems here range from an ankle sprained on vacation to arthritis that makes the daily walk a little harder every year.

Our Honolulu clinic, in the Ala Moana Medical Building on Kapi‘olani Boulevard, is roughly two miles from Waikīkī. It offers walk-in orthopedic urgent care through Wiki Wiki Orthopedics, X-ray, diagnostic ultrasound, and in-house physical therapy. Surgery is available if you need it.

From diagnosis and physical therapy to injections, advanced procedures, surgery, and recovery. Not every orthopedic problem needs surgery, and Pacific Bone & Joint is set up to move you through the right level of care instead of pushing everyone toward one treatment.

  2. 2ImagingX-ray and diagnostic ultrasound are available in the office, so most problems can be imaged during the visit. MRI is arranged when it will change the plan.

  4. 4InjectionsCorticosteroid and other injections, with ultrasound guidance when accuracy matters, and PRP or BMAC for selected patients.
  5. 5Office proceduresUltrasound-guided carpal tunnel release and trigger finger release, with local anesthesia and no hospital stay for most patients.
  6. 6SurgeryArthroscopy, ACL and meniscus surgery, cartilage restoration, fracture care, and hip and knee replacement, including revision.
  7. 7RecoveryPost-operative protocols, bracing, and follow-up coordinated by the same team that planned your care.

Who will I see?

Pacific Bone & Joint is a team-based orthopedic practice. Depending on the reason for your visit, your care may involve an orthopedic surgeon, a physician assistant, a physical therapist, imaging staff, or another member of the orthopedic team. Surgical decisions and operations are handled by the surgeon. Other parts of your evaluation, rehabilitation, follow-up, injections, and recovery may involve other clinicians.

Common Conditions We Treat

What brings Waikīkī patients to us

Ankle sprains and foot fractures

Uneven sidewalks, reef, and rental-bike spills. Imaging shows whether it is a sprain or a fracture that needs a boot or cast.

Wrist and hand injuries

Falls on an outstretched hand while surfing, skating, or stepping off a curb. A wrist fracture can feel like a sprain.

Shoulder injuries

Wave impacts and paddling can strain or dislocate the shoulder. Early evaluation guides the sling, rehab, and imaging plan.

Twisting knee injuries

Meniscus tears and ligament sprains, including ACL injuries, from the sand, the surf, and the trail.

Hip and knee arthritis

For residents, worn joints that make the walk to the beach or along the Ala Wai harder.

Tendon pain

Achilles, plantar fascia, and elbow pain from suddenly walking, paddling, or playing much more than usual.

Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation

Orthopedics and physical therapy, coordinated

Many orthopedic conditions improve without surgery. PB&J Physical Therapy works inside our Honolulu and Waipahu/Kunia clinics, so you can move from diagnosis to rehabilitation with one coordinated plan, and your therapist and orthopedic provider can talk about your progress.

You do not need to be a surgical patient to do therapy with us, and Hawai‘i allows direct access to physical therapy without a physician referral (some plans still require one for coverage). Not every patient needs therapy; it is recommended when it fits the problem.

Nonsurgical Options

Start with the least invasive reasonable option

Most patients start here. Many never need anything more.

If surgery is needed, it is scheduled at an O‘ahu surgical facility after your evaluation. Visitors can talk with the team about whether treatment in Hawai‘i or at home makes more sense.

Common Questions

Questions from Waikīkī patients

I’m visiting Hawai‘i and got hurt. Can I be seen?+

Yes. Wiki Wiki Orthopedics at our Honolulu clinic accepts walk-ins for new orthopedic injuries such as sprains, suspected fractures, and shoulder injuries. Bring a photo ID and your insurance card. Coverage for out-of-state plans varies, so call (808) 439-6201 before your visit if you can. Self-pay is also available.

Should I go to the emergency room instead?+

Call 911 or go to an emergency department for a bone through the skin, a badly deformed limb, numbness or a cold, pale hand or foot, a head or neck injury, or major trauma. For most sprains, simple fractures, and painful joints, a same-day orthopedic visit is a more direct route to orthopedic treatment.

Can I fly home after an orthopedic injury?+

Often, yes, but it depends on the injury. A new cast or boot, swelling, and long flights can raise the risk of problems such as blood clots. Your orthopedic provider can tell you whether flying is reasonable, how to protect the injury on the plane, and which records to take home to your own doctor.

Do you have X-ray at the Honolulu clinic?+

Yes. X-ray and diagnostic ultrasound are available in the office, so most injuries can be imaged during the visit. If an MRI is needed, we arrange it.

I live in Waikīkī. Can I do physical therapy nearby?+

Yes. PB&J Physical Therapy works out of the Honolulu clinic at Ala Moana, the closest Pacific Bone & Joint clinic to Waikīkī. Hawai‘i allows direct access to physical therapy, so you can see a physical therapist without a physician referral, although some insurance plans still require one for coverage.

Who will I see at Pacific Bone & Joint?+

It depends on why you are coming in. A walk-in injury visit, a physical therapy evaluation, and a joint-replacement consultation involve different members of the team: an orthopedic surgeon, a physician assistant, physical therapists, and imaging and clinical staff. Surgical decisions and operations are handled by the surgeon.
