Orthopedic Care for Windward O‘ahu
Orthopedic Care for Patients in Windward O‘ahu, Hawai‘i
Windward O‘ahu — Kailua, Lanikai, Kāne‘ohe, Waimānalo, and the communities toward Kahalu‘u — is known for canoe paddling, ocean sports, and hikes like the Lanikai Pillbox. Marine Corps Base Hawaii brings many service members and their families to Kāne‘ohe Bay. Paddlers’ shoulders, runners’ knees, and arthritic hips all show up in our clinic.
Windward patients are seen at our Honolulu clinic at Ala Moana, just over the Pali or Likelike Highway, for clinic visits, imaging, injections, and physical therapy. When knee replacement is needed, robotic-assisted surgery can be done at Adventist Health Castle in Kailua, so many Windward patients can have surgery close to home.

Who will I see?
Pacific Bone & Joint is a team-based orthopedic practice. Depending on the reason for your visit, your care may involve an orthopedic surgeon, a physician assistant, a physical therapist, imaging staff, or another member of the orthopedic team. Surgical decisions and operations are handled by the surgeon. Other parts of your evaluation, rehabilitation, follow-up, injections, and recovery may involve other clinicians.

Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation
Orthopedics and physical therapy, coordinated
Many orthopedic conditions improve without surgery. PB&J Physical Therapy works inside our Honolulu and Waipahu/Kunia clinics, so you can move from diagnosis to rehabilitation with one coordinated plan, and your therapist and orthopedic provider can talk about your progress.
You do not need to be a surgical patient to do therapy with us, and Hawai‘i allows direct access to physical therapy without a physician referral (some plans still require one for coverage). Not every patient needs therapy; it is recommended when it fits the problem.

“He and his staff respect my time, are super friendly and efficient, and the office is always clean and calm. I appreciate Dr. Morton’s approach to treatments and that he is up to date on current developments in his field. He takes his time listening and explaining; not once have I felt uninformed.”

Common Questions
Questions from Windward O‘ahu patients
Can my joint replacement be done on the Windward side?+
For knees, often yes: robotic-assisted knee replacement with the CORI® system is performed at Adventist Health Castle in Kailua. Robotic hip replacement is currently performed at Hilo Community Surgery Center on Hawai‘i Island. Pre-operative visits and most follow-up take place at our Honolulu clinic, and physical therapy can be at our Honolulu or Waipahu/Kunia clinic. Where surgery happens depends on the procedure, your health, and your insurance.
I’m active duty or in a military family. Can I be seen?+
Yes. TRICARE Prime and VA patients usually need a referral or authorization before the visit, so start that process with your primary care manager or VA team. Veterans can also ask about our veteran orthopedic evaluations.
Do you treat paddling injuries?+
Yes. Most paddling shoulder problems improve with targeted rehabilitation, stroke and training changes, and time. Imaging and, in selected cases, injections help when progress stalls.
Do I need a referral?+
Many plans do not require one. Ohana Medicare, AlohaCare, QUEST, VA, and TRICARE Prime require a referral or prior authorization before the visit. Our team can help you check.
Can I be treated without surgery?+
Most patients are. Physical therapy, bracing, activity changes, medication, and injections are the starting point for most orthopedic problems. Surgery is discussed when those options have not worked or when an injury clearly needs it.
