Surgery & Technology

Where your surgery happens

Consults, imaging, and follow-up happen at our Kona clinic at Mohala Health. For Kona patients, robotic joint replacement is typically performed at Hilo Community Surgery Center with the MAKO® CT-based robotic system — an outpatient surgery center here on the Big Island, so eligible patients don't need to fly to Oahu. When a hospital setting is the better fit, surgery takes place on Oahu at The Queen's Medical Center (ROSA® robotic total knee) or Adventist Health Castle (CORI® robotic hip and knee).

Where appropriate, Dr. Morton uses an anterior (bikini) muscle-sparing approach for the hip and a subvastus approach for the knee. The robot assists; Dr. Morton controls every step. Not everyone is a candidate.
