Work Injury

Workers' compensation orthopedic care

Hurt on the job? We treat work-related injuries at all four clinics — evaluation, imaging, surgery when needed, and in-house physical therapy on Oahu — and provide the documentation, work-status notes, and return-to-work planning your claim needs.

In Hawai‘i, injured workers generally have the right to choose their own treating physician. If you would like that to be us, call and we will help you get started.

What we'll need before your visit

  • Date of injury and a brief description of how it happened
  • Employer name, address, and a supervisor or HR contact
  • Confirmation that you reported the injury to your employer (a copy of the employer's report of injury, form WC-1, if you have it)
  • Your employer's workers' compensation insurance carrier, claim number, and adjuster name and phone, if assigned
  • Photo ID

No claim number yet? Call us anyway. We can often start the paperwork with your employer and carrier information.

How It Works

Work injuries are billed differently

A work injury is billed to your employer's workers' compensation carrier, not to your health plan, so the claim needs its own paperwork before your first visit. Having the information in the checklist above keeps your care from being delayed.

Report the injury to your supervisor or employer as soon as reasonably possible, and tell every clinician you see that the problem is work-related. Keep copies of your work notes, forms, restrictions, and medical records.

This is general information, not legal advice. Claim-specific questions should go to the Hawai‘i Disability Compensation Division, your employer's insurer, or appropriate legal counsel. Read more about reporting a workplace injury in Hawai‘i →

Your choice of physician

You generally choose who treats you

The State of Hawai‘i says injured workers may obtain treatment from a physician of their choice who practices on the island where they live. Hawai‘i also limits a worker to one attending physician at a time and has notice requirements for changing physicians, so let us know if you have already been seen elsewhere for this injury.

Your Care

Everything a work injury needs, in one place

From the first exam through return to work, your surgeon and care team handle the orthopedic side so you can focus on getting better.

Evaluation & imagingA careful exam that connects your diagnosis to how the injury happened and to the physical demands of your job, with on-site X-ray and ultrasound when needed.
Non-surgical treatmentPhysical therapy, bracing, image-guided injections, and activity modification — most work injuries are treated without surgery.
Surgery when neededFracture repair, ligament and tendon surgery, hand and wrist procedures, and joint surgery when a work injury genuinely needs an operation.
Physical therapy on OahuPB&J Physical Therapy works inside our Honolulu and Waipahu/Kunia clinics. On the Big Island, we coordinate your rehab with local therapy partners.
Work-status notes & documentationWork restrictions, work-status notes, progress reports, and the documentation your claim and your employer need, provided after each visit.
Return-to-work planningA plan that moves you back toward your usual duties as your recovery allows, with restrictions updated along the way.

Common Questions

Workers' compensation questions, answered

Do you accept Workers’ Compensation?+

Yes. Pacific Bone & Joint treats work-related injuries under Workers’ Compensation at all four clinics, including evaluation, surgery when needed, and in-house physical therapy on Oahu. Before your first visit we need the date of injury, your employer’s name and contact, confirmation that the injury was reported to your employer, and your employer’s workers’ compensation carrier, claim number, and adjuster contact if one has been assigned.

Can I choose Pacific Bone & Joint as my treating physician?+

In Hawai‘i, injured workers generally have the right to choose their own treating physician, as long as that physician practices on the island where they live. Hawai‘i limits a worker to one attending physician at a time and has notice requirements for changing physicians, so tell us if you have already been treated elsewhere for this injury and we will help you sort out the next step.

What if I don’t have a claim number yet?+

Call us anyway. We can often start the paperwork with your employer and carrier information, and add the claim number and adjuster contact once they are assigned.

Will you provide work-status notes for my employer?+

Yes. Work restrictions, work-status notes, and progress documentation are part of every workers’ compensation visit, and we update them as your recovery allows.

Is physical therapy included?+

Yes. PB&J Physical Therapy works inside our Honolulu and Waipahu/Kunia clinics on Oahu, so your therapy is planned with the same team treating your injury. On the Big Island, we coordinate your rehabilitation with trusted local physical therapy partners.

What about car accidents or injuries on someone else’s property?+

Those are handled as auto accident (PIP) or personal injury claims, which have their own paperwork. See the injury claims section of our Insurance page for what each one needs.
